In these challenging times, the East Central Spokane community must come together for the greater good of each other. As the cost of living rises and the hardships grow, our strength lies in unity. We need to rekindle the spirit of community that once made East Central a place where neighbors looked out for each other and shared in the joy of togetherness.
That’s why a few local organizations are joining forces to bring back our annual holiday events, aiming to revive the traditions that kept our community close-knit and resilient. There was a time when East Central came alive during the holidays, with every celebration reminding us of the importance of fellowship and service. Each Thanksgiving, we would start the morning at the MLK Center, serving food, donating desserts, and mingling with neighbors. It wasn’t just about the meal – it was about giving our time to others and taking a moment to appreciate
Community on a day that allows us to connect with people from all walks of life, whether they came for a hot meal, a kind word, or simply to enjoy the sense of belonging.
This year, we are determined to bring back that sense of community and giving. Our goal is to get people out of their homes and into the heart of East Central, volunteering in the morning to ensure everyone in the neighborhood has a hot meal on Thanksgiving Day. It’s not just about providing food–it’s about coming together to lift each other up and make sure no one feels forgotten.
In addition to serving meals, we will be collecting non-perishable food items to keep our community pantries stocked throughout the winter. This effort will help ensure that no one goes without the essentials as the colder months set in. Let’s restore the holiday spirit that once defined East Central and show that, despite the difficulties, we can still come together to make a difference. Now, more than ever, it’s time to revive the traditions that unite us and give back to the community that has always been our home.
