Bias awareness must be a part of the AI revolution

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to drastically impact various aspects of society, including the lives of Black people. The implications of AI on this demographic group are multi-faceted, ranging from economic opportunities to potential biases in algorithmic decision-making. College students specifically should critically examine the ways in which AI may affect Black people, and to consider the potential consequences of these technological advancements.

One of the primary ways in which AI can affect Black people is through the workforce. As AI becomes more prevalent in industries such as manufacturing and customer service, there is a concern that these advancements could lead to job displacement for those already facing higher rates of unemployment and underemployment. However, it is also important to consider the potential for AI to create new job opportunities in fields such as data science and machine learning, which could provide Black people with new career pathways.

In addition to the workforce, AI can also impact education and access to information for Black people. With the rise of online learning platforms and AI-powered tutoring programs, there is a potential for increased access to high-quality education for marginalized communities. However, there is also a risk that AI algorithms could perpetuate racial biases in educational systems, leading to disparities in academic achievement for Black students.

Furthermore, AI has the potential to affect criminal justice outcomes for Black people. By addressing these issues proactively, we can work towards harnessing the full potential of AI for all populations. Bias detection and identifying harmful behavior patterns in the workplace can support efforts to reinforce fairness especially when there are gaps and blindspots.
